An ESD workstation can look properly equipped and still contain gaps.

The work surface may be grounded, but sensitive components are placed on an ungrounded shelf. An operator may wear a wrist strap, while insulative packaging sits only a few inches from the product. A workstation may have been installed correctly, but accessories, carts, bins, or cleaning products have changed over time.

Effective ESD control requires more than checking a few products off a list. It requires looking at the workstation as part of a larger system.

Start With the Work

Before choosing a bench, mat, monitor, or grounding accessory, begin with the process.

What product is being handled? How sensitive is it? Where are components stored and staged? What tools and materials need to remain within reach? Are operators seated, standing, or moving between work areas?

A well-designed workstation supports the actual workflow while helping operators follow ESD procedures consistently.

 

 

Look Beyond the Work Surface

Sensitive products do not remain in one place. They may move between the work surface, shelves, bins, carts, racks, inspection stations, and packaging areas.

That means every location where products are handled, stored, or transported should be considered as part of the ESD control plan.

Workstation design should also account for:

  • Personnel grounding
  • Grounded shelving and ESD-safe storage
  • Continuous monitoring
  • Insulative materials within the protected work area
  • Ionization when insulators cannot be removed
  • Routine testing, cleaning, and verification

Even small changes can create unintended risks. Adding a shelf, changing packaging, relocating a bench, or introducing a new cleaning product may affect how the overall system performs.

 

Make the Right Process Easier

Operators are more likely to follow ESD procedures when the workstation supports the way they work.

Proper storage keeps unnecessary materials away from sensitive products. Overhead accessories preserve valuable work surface space. Ergonomic positioning reduces the temptation to move tools, parts, or equipment into improper locations.

The goal is not simply to add more ESD equipment. It is to create a workstation that protects the product, supports the operator, and remains easy to inspect and maintain.
